New ACVA President William Levacy

Welcome and Happy
New Year.

I’ve been given the privilege to take over the office of President for ACVA . This is quite an honor to step into a role governed so heartfully for so many years by the esteemed Dr. Dennis Harness. During the past 17 years Dennis has steered us all on a series of amazing adventures through the shastras of Jyotish and into the palatial hotels of symposia around the globe. I know for one that I might not have visited so many beautiful places nor met so many fascinating people around the world had it not been for the opportunities set up by Dr. Harness. It is a joy and honor to take this opportunity to thank him on behalf of our entire Vedic astrology community.

It is a great time to be involved with Vedic astrology, a knowledge so ancient in its foundations yet so modern and practical in its application. It is

great to have a tool to know a little bit more about what lies ahead so we can all prepare ourselves more safely in these challenging times. And it’s great to have such a storehouse of knowledge like ACVA Online and its great offering of Vedic astrology courses.

I would like to encourage everyone to do what they can to help ACVA stay healthy and fresh in the months and years ahead. The treasure of Vedic knowledge is quite great and rare. Whatever little bit we can do, either donating time or money to help ACVA or referring friends to our courses, will declare that we have done something wonderful to help keep this knowledge alive and available for learners all around the world.

I am looking forward to do what I can to help ACVA grow and prosper. I hope you all can hold a light in your hearts for the continued success of our American College of Vedic Astrology....and of course we at ACVA will do all we can to keep the light of Jyotish open at the door of knowledge for all of you.

Onward and upward,

Bill Levacy

January Webinar:

Sat Siri Khalsa

Saturday
January 9, 2010
Noon, EST

"What are Rasi Dristis and Why are They Important?" - 120 minutes

The webinar will explain the significance, power, and pervading presence of the aspects from sign to sign in the zodiac. Using horoscopes of famous people as well as looking at current transits and the upcoming Kumbha Mela, the celebration of Jupiter in Aquarius, we will come to a deeper understanding of this most important of dristis, or visions, for that is what the Sanskrit word for aspect implies. If they are not important, why does Parashara teach about sign aspects even before mentioning planetary aspects? We will see the geometry that accounts for them and the spiritual principles that explain them. The rasi dristis link the actual natural realities of our lives, while the graha dristis show the things we only desire and may or may not obtain.

February Webinar:

Christina Collins

Saturday
February 13, 2010
Noon, EST

"Compatibility" - 90 minutes

Matching two or more charts for potentially harmonious connections (or disconnects) between two or more individuals. Christina will illustrate the concepts of compatibility in: Love / Marriage relationships, Family relationships and Business relationships.

Initially, we identity and investigate each person’s natal horoscope regarding their individual tendencies and how they personally relate regarding relationship(s). Then, we compare the horoscopes to evaluate if it is a Love connection, a Marriage connection (or both). For business the parameters are similar, yet more emphasis on the houses of business, and the Kuta Agreements focus on wealth of assets and property rather than on growth of family or children. The Navamsa is considered in both, while in Marriage we work with the Saptamsa (children) and in Business comparing, we work more with the Dashamsa -
the 7th and 10th harmonic charts.

Light Notes from Editor Christina Collins

Happy New Year!

Welcome to our new ACVA President William R. Levacy. The ACVA board, faculty and steering committees feel very lucky and grateful that Bill now serves as the leader and guide for the college.

In the midst of his busy schedule in aerospace, his full schedule as a brilliant consulting Jyotish astrologer (it can sometimes take weeks to get an appointment with him) and his current involvement in completing his PhD in online education - somehow he manages to also have the time to lead us with brilliance, insight and ever present humor. We welcome him, and we thank him for his service.

Maha Kumba Mela! – Jupiter now in Aquarius!

Jupiter now resides in Aquarius, finished with its sojourn in Capricorn, its sign of debilitation for another twelve years.

The Shrimad Bhagavantam retells the historical life of Krishna, often referred to as the Hindu "Bible". Within this text we find the story of Kumba Mela and its origins.

Four times a year in the year that Jupiter resides in Kumbha (Aquarius) we celebrate with a big Mela (festival). At the holy junctions of the spiritual rivers in India. This is the time when the waters become spiritually purified, and all who enter to bathe, receive the blessings of God.

Monthly Planetary Tips

Planetary Tips January 1st 2010 to February 1st 2010

Every month, as the ACVA news observes the sidereal month's changing of signs, we use the current location of the US Capital, Washington, DC.

We begin the month of January with the Full Moon or lunar eclipse, which began with New Year's Eve's conjunction of Ketu in Gemini opposite the Sun at 16'39 Sagittarius, conjunct Rahu at 27'04. Mars continues its retrograde motion in Cancer, 24'47 Ashlesha, transiting 8th from the Mercury Rx in close to exact degree of 24'46 Sagittarius. Venus, at 14'06 also resides in Sagittarius, combust the Sun, influenced by the eclipse. Jupiter now at 2'23 Aquarius, and Saturn at 10'30 Virgo are no longer in aspect, although they receive the influence of the lunar eclipse in that Jupiter is in Saturn's sign, Saturn is in Mercury's sign and Mercury is in papa ketari yoga seated between the Sun and Mercury. The Sun is not always a natural malefic, however, in this case, it picks up the influence of the eclipse.

As you will see below, most of the changes occur early in the month with the planets staying in the same signs for the later part of the month.

Jyotish: A Sacred Journey

In sanskrit the study of Jyotish is called Jyotir Vidya. Jyotir meaning Light and Vidya meaning Science. The "science of light" or "Goddess of Light". It is said that in order to understand Jyotish, the Jyotir Vidya must come for you and when she does, she'll devour you.

The Jyotir Vidya directs each student to their Guru. We may interpret her touch as a shazam moment or a deep stirring within, guiding us to seek out the knowledge of the Veda's. However she approaches, the Jyotir Vida, our cosmic teacher, is sure to work within the hearts and minds of her students. - Read Complete - January Student Editor

Utthita Trikonasana - Upward Rising Triangle Pose:

This is one of the most classic of the standing poses and clearest for seeing the geometry that underlies yoga asana. Notice the three angles that are created in the asana representing the trinity of creation through Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. When the apex is pointed down it is a Shakti triangle symbolizing the movement of consciousness into form drawn by the earth's gravitational pull…or the embrace of a mother for her children. The Shiva triangle has the apex pointing up as form seeks illumination and meaning within the cosmos. In Trikonasana the upward hand becomes the antennae reaching for the light of Shiva consciousness to descend and enter into the body as - Read Complete - January Yoga Tip
