July 2010 Presidents Letter by WIlliam LevacyInside This Issue

William Levacy
Do you know why the Summer Solstice is the day that Astrologers speak the most? (It might be because June 21 is the longest day of the year!!).

Influences of the seasons and astrology are found in Vedic culture as well as almost every religion across time and space. The ancient astronomers have blended their knowledge of the Sun and the stars into seasonal celebrations.

The Summer Solstice marks the point where the Sun has gone the furthest on its yearly journey to the North, deep into the land of the Devas. Now the Sun slows down for a few days, even appearing to stop (“sol stice” or Sun slowing), and turns (Greek “tropos” for tropical) around to start its new yearly journey to the South. Northern cultures all around the world celebrate the warm days of summer and bask in the rays of anticipated success and prosperity.

As the Sun begins to pause and suspend time a bit as it turns, the ACVA Online team also wants to pause and celebrate the new Summer energies as well. It has

The Four Aims Of Life

As students of Jyotish, we learn to examine and judge an astrological chart. Throughout this learning process, we meet and begin to understand the grahas, rashis, bhavas, their yogas and various interactions. Many students have commented, “ I keep studying, but I still don't feel like I understand what I am looking at”. Let’s face it, there are only so many ways to look at graha, we must find the breath and life of the chart, otherwise its just a diagram and glyphs.

In classic Hinduism, The Four Aims or “Purusharthas” represent four different goals to live a fruitful and happy life. They are considered to be the purpose of consciousness. Through the development of these ideals, one will live a happy and prosperous life. These goals are interwoven in the chart and represent the elements that create all things:

Dharma (virtue or righteousness): Each one of us is born with a purpose and it is our duty, our souls urging, to find and fulfill that purpose. Dharma is Fire and corresponds to bhavas 1-Aries, 5-Leo, 9-Saggitarius. These bhavas have initiative, creativity, ethics and are devotional. They are considered to be places of Lakshmi as they offer Read Complete Article

Quote of the Quarter

By Richelle Jarrell

“Saturn is the planet of time. Time is the great container of all worldly experiences. Managing time, and dealing with the limitations time places on us as has a lot to do with our life and how much we get out of it. Saturn is the force that makes us aware of time and its patient progression…Once we enter the wheel of Time, we must face the complex of loss, endings and facing our limitations…Saturn teaches us to live simply and move beyond our attachment to a phony sense of security that comes from excessive materialism. When a person is excessively materialistic, Saturn's influence hurts them deeply. It is the nature of Saturn to shatter our illusions around fear and make us grow up. Saturn makes us mature. His influence exerts physical and psychological pressure that we cannot ignore. Based on this pressure we deepen our commitment to something, body, mind or soul.”

Quoted from the article Saturn Turns Direct - Our Evolving Commitment to Body, Mind or Soul by Sam Geppi, May 2009 http://vedicastrologycenter.net
