Planetary Tips October 1st to November 1st 2009

Every month, as the ACVA news observes the sidereal month’s changing of signs, we use the current location of the US Capital, Washington, DC.

October 1, 2009 -- We begin the month with: Saturn, now in Virgo certainly seems to be shaking everyone up these days! Actually what we are experiencing is change. Like the moving of a house from one foundation, next door to another foundation. The “shaking,” effect such as the increase of earthquakes, and their magnitude, increases by the transit of Mars in Gemini in Ardra nakshatra, throwing its 4th aspect on Saturn. Mars has a special dristi or aspect, it influences the house it is transiting in, the 4th, and 8th houses from its position. (All planets in Jyotish aspect the 7th house from where it is posited). The further Mars moves in Longitude the more it throws its aspect ahead of the degree of Saturn, who is still in the very early degrees of Virgo.

One very interesting way to observe Saturn’s transit is to view it from the Saturn point of view. Stand on Virgo, the current position of Saturn. Note, that from Virgo, the 5th house (trines are good) is ruled by Saturn. Now, that’s pretty good. Note also that the 6th house (Aquarius) is owned by Saturn. Now, that can be mixed. Note that the 8th house is ruled by Mars, who resides now in Punarvasu, Gemini. Mercury generally travels within 45 degrees of the Sun, so as we experience the Sun, now in Mercury’s sign of Virgo, Mercury will join the Sun in its sign of exaltation this month. This improves the Status of Saturn in its friend’s sign of Virgo. Even as Venus moves to Virgo, its debilitation cancels with Mercury, and when Mercury moves to Libra, the house exchange (pari vartana yoga) will still improve the qualities of Saturn in its new location. At least for the present month of October. November will be a different story, when Mercury moves to enemy Mars’ sign of Scorpio. Please come back for the November tips for an explanation of that transit.

The biggest news for planetary change in October is the Planet Mars. On October 5th Mars moves into Cancer. It will no longer aspect Saturn, but, it will be in its weakest location, its sign of debilitation. The highest degree of debilitation is 28 for Mars (just opposite of its high exaltation point of 28 Capricorn)

This brings me to a story about Mars. Years ago (more than 20), one of my students asked me about Mars. They said, “If Moon has no enemies, then why is Chandra Mangala Yoga bad?” I said back then, well its not always bad, it can be good for women, for it means they get presents from men… but I’ll get back to you on that….

That night, I had a dream (and of course, now better read and experienced, I have seen this in books as well). Its not that Chandra Mangala Yoga is bad, rather it can be weakening for Mars and Moon as they debilitate in each other’s signs. Mars debilitates in Cancer and Moon debilitates in Scorpio. Now, if someone has a parivartana yoga (house exchange) of Moon and Mars, and this yoga involves the ascendant (especially Cancer or Scorpio Rising – which if Moon is in Scorpio is Chandra Lagna anyway) then this brings the Yoga way up in power, giving great gains to that individual. If other indicators in the chart allow – they might become healers, doctors, nurses or marry very powerful people. Often you learn that parivartana yoga lifts planets up to exaltation. Yes, it brings power – but it at the same time, can affect the demeanor of the individual where their bark can be as bad as a bite!

So bottom line with this transit of Mars which ends on May 26th 2010. (Yep! That’s why I’m writing about it – 8 months in Cancer!) is to closely follow:
  • the retrogradation of Mars,

  • the Dispositor of Mars, and the

  • Exaltation Dispositor of the sign Cancer
That means watch the Moon and watch Jupiter who exalts in Cancer.

When the Moon is in good relation with Mars, situations improve. Even when Moon is debilitated, you see it forms Parivartana Yoga (where the planets exchange houses).
  • Also watch Rahu and Ketu as they will be still be transiting in Cancer this month, along with Mars.

  • Consider the transits of the Moon (the Dispositor of this Ketu) when it transits in the Stars associated with Rahu and Ketu

    • Moon when in the nakshatras of Ashwini, Magha, Mula (fire signs connected to Ketu) and Ardra, Swati and Satabisha (air signs connected to Rahu)
Rahu and Ketu begin and end the month residing in Cancer and Capricorn. They become Sandi on October 28th.

They will be Sandi Cancer until November 2nd when they retrograde back to 29.00 of Gemini and Sagittarius respectively, ending their 18 month sojourn in water and earth and changing to air and fire. This influence has already begun as they near this change, as you can see macrocosmically in the world with the increase of very big and dangerous fires.

Current Positions and their Planetary Ingress in October 2009

We begin the month of October with: Mars in Gemini, much happier now in Jupiter’s nakshatra of Punarvasu. Much better than the former, Ardra, Rahu’s star.

Mars, Venus and Jupiter and the Sun (and the Moon for a few days) all become debilitated this month, but in most cases there is neecha banga or cancellation of debilitation for at least a part of the month.

October Planetary Tips Chart 01

October 1st
Mars in Gemini, Punarvasu (Jupiter’s star)

(Neptune and Uranus both are sandi at 00’)

October 1st
Mars at 27’48, though better in Punarvasu, begins the month becoming Sandi (changing signs) as it moves ever closer to its debilitation in Cancer.

October 2nd
Neptune Retrogrades back to Sidereal Capricorn

October 4th
Mars will be sandi in Gemini at 29’00
Mercury will be sandi in Leo at 29’00

October 5th
Mars moves to Debilitation 00’00 Cancer
Mercury moves to Exaltation at 00’00 Virgo

October 9th
Venus will be sandi in Leo at 29’00

October 10th
Venus transits to Virgo at 00’00 Venus’ debilitation is cancelled until October 24th (because it is conjunct exalted Mercury)

October 13th
Jupiter goes Direct (losing the cancellation of debilitation caused by Retrograde motion).
October Sun will change to Virgo

October 16th
Sun becomes sandi at 29 Virgo

October 17th
Sun will change to 00’ Libra

October 20th
Mars, Sun, Venus, Moon, and Jupiter will all be debilitated by transit, there will be hours in the day, and Navamsas during the day that will temporarily cancel the debilitation. Mercury in exaltation will cancel the debilitation of Venus.

October 24th
Mercury moves to Libra in the afternoon (leaving Venus alone in Virgo
Venus now in parivartana yoga with Mercury - this also lifts Venus from debilitation but does not cancel it altogether!
This transit continues all month.

October 27th
Ketu and Rahu at 00’51 begin to leave Cancer and Capricorn. The transit of any planet as it changes has its dramas. Cancer and those ruled by that sign has been particularly hard hit in recent years. First by the transit of Saturn for seven and one half years (Sadi Sati), then by the movement of Ketu into Cancer (and Rahu’s aspect from Capricorn – the nodes are always opposite in the sky), then by Cancer’s exaltation Dispositor transiting in debilitation in Capricorn, and further by that Jupiter experiencing close connection with the Karmic Nodes. And now, for 8 months Mars will move in debilation until May of 2010!

Watch for the Retrograde motion of Mars, (December 20th) as it provides temporary relief for this sign. When a debilitated (neecha) planet moves in retrograde motion, it temporarily cancels the debilitation of the planet. (neecha banga raja yoga)
