Frequently Asked Questions

New ACVA Online Learning Model and Policies
Effective April, 2010 - Page Three

What is the purpose of the new ACVA Online Certification?
  • The new ACVA Online certificate marks completion of a course of studies for Level I or Level II at ACVA Online. As with all worthy credentials, the ACVA document certifies that the named person has proven their competency in the field of Vedic astrology. Differing from past credentials, it is not a license to offer tutoring credits for aspiring new credential seeking learners. It is the purpose of ACVA Online to offer the credential after students finish their course of studies and pass the qualifying online exam.

Will there continue to be ACVA symposia?
  • ACVA welcomes participation in symposia on Vedic astrology. However, experience shows that sponsoring these events is very costly in terms of manpower and finances required to run them. Over the last several symposia, ACVA has either broken even or lost money. In the past, donations helped filled the gap. Now that is no longer true with donations being down. At such a time when there are the resources to do so, ACVA would like to conduct a symposia on Vedic astrology.

Can I take the ACVA test at a site ACVA certifies for that purpose?
  • In the near term, for a few students in transition from the old to new learning model, ACVA will offer testing at a few non-ACVA events , ACVA will end face-to-face testing after those selected events this Summer, 2010. With the new ACVA Online format, testing will be offered at stated intervals via web-based certification exams.

How can I become an ACVA tutor in the new system?
  • The ACVA Online model of learning Vedic astrology is conducted by experienced instructors who have been taught specifically how to deliver training via web-based, interactive classrooms. Quality control of teaching is maintain by quarterly instructor reviews. Classes are audited and student surveys taken to insure the quality of education remains high. These kinds of quality checks were not available in the tutor-led model. Within the next year, ACVA intends to invite more former tutors to take special instructor training in online delivery of education.

Is there any way that students can still work with me as a tutor for ACVA credit?
  • The tutor-led model is retiring and while tutors can still teach anyone they choose about Vedic astrology, such tutoring will not qualify for ACVA Online credits. Only instructors trained by ACVA in online teaching methodology will be able to teach online.

Won’t all these changes alienate a high percentage of the Jyotish community since this new ACVA Online model seems to strip away the title that many worked hard for, of being ACVA certified teachers and tutors?
  • Again, ACVA was forced to change its teaching strategy based on economic drivers. It was not an arbitrary or rash decision. Much thought went into it, and many people were consulted. In the last two years the tutor model brought in less than $1000 in revenue for ACVA. Tutors retrieved the majority of the finances from tutoring fees, of which ACVA received no share. This was a workable model and evolved over the years sustained by donations. When the donations stopped with the economic downturn, regrettably, ACVA was forced to abandon this historical teaching model since it was not self-supporting. Many companies have had to do drastic things in the last couple years in order to keep their doors open. ACVA was one of them.
